Can you discuss your or your company’s efforts relating to renewability, sustainability, or other environmentally-friendly activities?
Sustainability is at the core of our strategic vision, driving both innovation and responsible business practices. Our commitment goes beyond compliance; we actively collaborate with industry stakeholders to drive systemic change and set higher environmental standards.
Beyond operations, this commitment is deeply embedded in our corporate governance framework. We align ESG principles with long-term business strategies, integrating responsible practices into how we structure projects, select partners, and make investment decisions.
Personally, I am deeply invested in fostering a culture of sustainability within our organisation. I actively advocate for policies that not only ensure compliance, but also encourage innovation in sustainable practices. My role allows me to influence decisions that align business growth with ethical responsibility, ensuring that sustainability is not just a corporate goal but a shared mindset among our teams.
Why are in-house lawyers well-placed to drive change in their organisations?
In-house lawyers are uniquely positioned to bridge legal frameworks, corporate governance, and strategic decision-making. With a deep understanding of both regulatory landscapes and business operations, we ensure that sustainability, ethics, and compliance are not separate agendas but fundamental aspects of corporate growth while protecting the best interests of our organisations.
We play a pivotal role in shaping policies that promote transparency, long-term sustainability, and ethical business conduct. Our influence extends beyond risk mitigation, we identify opportunities where legal strategies can drive innovation and sustainable growth.
More than ever, legal teams are becoming key architects of change, embedding responsible business practices into corporate DNA and ensuring that progress aligns with both commercial success and societal impact.
It can be challenging to measure a company’s track record in environmentally friendly behaviour. What, in your opinion, has mostly been missed in discussions about how green a company is?
Discussions about corporate sustainability often focus on visible metrics, such as carbon footprints, renewable energy usage, and recycling programs. While these are important, what is often overlooked is the depth of corporate commitment beyond surface-level initiatives.
True sustainability is not just about immediate impact but about embedding ESG into governance structures, operational models, and long-term business strategies.
In 2025, we will release our first ESG report, setting a new benchmark for accountability and sustainability in the construction industry.
Another crucial yet underappreciated factor is the role of AI and data analytics in sustainability. Advanced technology enables companies to track, predict, and optimise their environmental footprint more effectively. However, without strong governance frameworks, even the best data-driven sustainability efforts lack credibility.
Sustainability should not be measured solely by individual actions but by a company’s ability to drive systemic change. Leading businesses do not just reduce their own footprint: they set industry standards, influence supply chains, and advocate for stronger regulations. Moving forward, the focus must shift from ‘green claims’ to demonstrable, long-term impact backed by transparency and responsible governance.
