Can you discuss your or your company’s efforts relating to renewability, sustainability, or other environmentally-friendly activities?
We have set a progressive and adaptable path towards sustainable development, with the purpose of continuing to offer better products without compromising the availability of resources for future generations and while contributing positively to the communities in which we operate. Notable current activities focus on water conservation efforts, renewable energy adoption, emission reduction initiatives, collaborating on sustainable agriculture practices and enhancing crop quality, and waste reduction and recycling.
Why are in-house lawyers well-placed to drive change in their organisations?
As in-house lawyers, we are not just transaction facilitators and compliance enforcers; we are also strategic enablers of business strategy and sustainability. We are uniquely positioned to drive environmental and sustainability strategies that align with international legal requirements and the purpose, mission, vision and values of the organisation. By leveraging our expertise in regulations, governance, contracts, and risk management, as well as our understanding of the business and operation’s needs, we can integrate environmental responsibility into the company’s core business strategy, collaborating in the decision-making process to ensure long-term sustainability and legal security.
It can be challenging to measure a company’s track record in environmentally friendly behavior. What, in your opinion, has mostly been missed in discussions about how green a company is?
End-to-end supply chain footprint (scope 3 emissions) is a particularly relevant, yet complex, metric to measure and manage for understanding how “green” a company really is. This is because a company’s true environmental impact extends far beyond its direct operations and includes what happens from raw material extraction to the final use and disposal of a product. Being able to measure and impact all these stages is challenging for a myriad of reasons, including transparency and data collection, different standards, and cooperation. Discussions on sensible ways to achieve deep collaboration between all players in the entire value chain, including both upstream (supplier-related) and downstream (customer-related) activities, that address accurate data collection and investment in systematic change, should be at the center of all sustainability efforts.
