Regional compliance officer and head of business ethics, Asia Pacific | Chanel
Wendy is the Head of Business Ethics for Asia Pacific at Chanel. She is the first regional compliance officer in APAC region and has established and led the team since she joined the Company in 2019. Her responsibilities include formulating and implementing both global and regional compliance-related policies and training, such as Our Ethics, Anti-Bribery and Corruption Policy, Gifts and Hospitality Policy and Anti-Trust Policy. Wendy reports to management on compliance-related matters and investigations as a member of the APAC legal executive leadership team. Under her leadership, the team has achieved great success in aligning compliance programmes and initiatives with business goals, particularly in building up suppliers’ due diligence and risk management framework. And she serves as a critical member in advancing corporate values and initiatives like sustainability, diversity, and inclusion. She has recently completed a course in Business Sustainability at the University of Cambridge. Her achievements have been well-recognised not only internally by her stakeholders but also externally by being awarded as one of the Asia Top 15 Compliance Officers by Asia Legal Business (ALB) in 2024.
Prior to joining Chanel, she served as the General Counsel and Compliance Director of McDonald’s Hong Kong. She played a key role in completing a high-profile and high-value deal for McDonald’s Corporation to form a long-term strategic partnership with CITIC Carlyle that served as the master franchisee responsible for operating McDonald’s businesses in mainland China and Hong Kong. She handled complicated commercial legal issues and due diligence processes and liaised with different internal and external stakeholders soon after she took up the role. During her tenure, McDonald’s Hong Kong underwent many new initiatives and changes like partnering with third-party delivery companies like Deliveroo and Foodpanda, mobile payment platforms like Alipay and WeChat Pay, as well as the launch of McDonald’s ordering app, Wendy played a critical role as the chief legal advisor and gatekeeper, contributing to the success of these projects and businesses. She was named as one of the winners of ALB 40 under 40.
Wendy began her career as a journalist after graduating from a double degree programme in laws and social sciences at the University of Hong Kong, and she successfully brings her media knowledge and communication skills to the legal industry. She has worked at the legal departments of various Hong Kong-listed companies before becoming a commercial litigator at a renowned UK litigation firm. She started her in-house career at IBM and also worked at the regional legal team of Calvin Klein before.
Wendy is an art and music lover. She has completed a master’s degree in Arts and Cultural Enterprises at the Central Saint Martins (CSM) College, University of the Arts London (UAL). She loves singing and playing piano and has participated in performing arts in her leisure time, including musical, a cappella and busking performances of Project After 6 by Swire Properties; and drama productions of Leetle Stage. She is also currently a member of the HKU Law Alumni Choir.
