Part of the conglomerate CK Hutchinson Holdings, A.S. Watson Group is the largest global international health and beauty retailer with 14,400 stores in 24 markets serving over four billion customers a year. The group has over 140,000 employees worldwide with just under 13,000 in Hong Kong. Comprised of 52 lawyers across Asia and Europe and five paralegals, the legal team at A.S. Watson is led by general counsel Amanda Yu. Whilst the Group’s central legal team is based at the company’s Hong Kong headquarters, the legal function’s other subdivisions are based in and assigned to separate business units. The legal team achieved a major success in the sale of almost 25% of A.S. Watson shares to Temasek in 2014. Since then, Yu has focused the team on solving problems related to the increasing complexity of the regulatory environment, and is implementing a strategic increase in the commercial involvement of the legal team whilst protecting the legal interests of the Group.
