Since 2011 Mitchell New has led the legal team at AIA Group
as group general counsel and company secretary. As the largest Asian Pacific insurance company, the company’s in-house legal team is responsible for the orchestration of all legal services and corporate governance functions within country operations. In July 2018, AIA International completed a deal with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia to acquire the Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Society and Sovereign Assurance Company in New Zealand, and enter a 20 year partnership with the bank in the region. This was a major success for AIA and is indicative of the strength of New’s legal team and in its support of the endeavour. New is a director of various companies within the Group including AIA International Limited and AIA Reinsurance Limited, displaying the value and respect with which internal lawyers advice is held in within the company.
