Rachel Huf leads the Hong Kong based legal team at Barclays in her role of general counsel Asia Pacific. The team contains 18 lawyers and two non-lawyers as part of a larger team of 100 lawyers across Hong Kong, India, Singapore and Tokyo. In Hong Kong, legal coverage areas include banking, covering investment, M&A, capital markets, equities, funds, distribution, structuring and financial crime. The legal team also fully supports litigation and investigations, regulatory relations, employment law issues, contract management, company secretarial and risk governance controls functions. The team has repeatedly demonstrated exemplary abilities to work cooperatively and in a non-territorial way across teams and with internal stakeholders generally, both on project work and transactions on issues of business re-alignment, un-cleared margin preparatory work, MiFID2 and
Asia Pacific regulations, OTC derivatives including Dodd Frank and EMIR and other significant US and EU regulation changes. Huf explains: ‘I was truly impressed by the focus, collaboration and constant communication to work through all of the issues whether it was notifications to Asia Pacific regulators, HR issues in difficult employment regimes, planning for the impact on clients and products and working towards an orderly closure or sale of businesses. People came together and truly pitched in and pulled their weight, there were no silos or territorial behaviour. It was a great example of collaboration with everyone working towards the same common purpose. That level of engagement, professionalism and collaboration is something I was immensely proud of especially during a period of uncertainty’. The legal team has taken a leading role in strategy advising for leading industry groups on legal and regulatory changes concerning EU and UK legislation in response to Brexit, and Hong Kong industry groups on technological developments including fintech. The team demonstrates leadership, drive and commitment on diversity and inclusion and citizenship initiatives also, and Huf herself is a regional executive sponsor for the “Spectrum” LGBT network, co-leading the Hong Kong chapter with team member Colin Dunlop, who also represents the Asia Pacific region at the global legal diversity and inclusion committee. Barclays has been recognised as a top-ten company in its Hong Kong LGBT workplace equality index, and is also recognised for its work internally and with the broader LGBT community through the legal team’s involvement in forums and associations. The head of North Asia legal, Rochelle Hooper, has been influential in chairing both the Hong Kong and regional Asia Pacific chapters of Barclays’ gender network (named “WiN”) and frequently represents Barclays via Women in Finance Asia and
The Women’s Foundation. Further proving its credentials in these aspects, lawyer Bobby Ladwa chairs the Hong Kong and Asia Pacific “Embrace” multicultural network which, in recent months, has launched a campaign encouraging colleagues to share unique stories related to their backgrounds. Additionally, team member Dan Shapiro leads the Hong Kong “Working Families Network”, and has been instrumental in re-launching
the network’s internal and external educational and social activities in Hong Kong.
