Founded in 1933, Wing Hang Bank is one of the oldest Hong Kong originated banks in existence, and is currently one of the largest banks in Asia. Dr Alex Wong, head of legal and compliance, has been in charge of the legal and compliance department since 2013 and responsible for the legal advisory, compliance and AML functions of the entire banking group including its overseas branches. The Bank is full service and international, including its subsidiaries, therefore the team’s role is multi-jurisdictional and wide-ranging. The Bank is in the process of implementing cutting-edge digital banking innovations, including a new payments system allowing customers to access their accounts and pay using WeChat, a global secure messaging service. This innovation involved the expertise of the legal department to handle security issues and compliance concerns. Another security innovation is the implementation of two tier security authorisation system for customers to access their accounts. This as part of its compliance with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority was supervised by the legal team, and implemented this year.
