Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?
It is likely that among those advances is the robotisation or automation of certain processes in legal departments such as repetitive and low-skilled tasks which may not be necessary for a lawyer to complete themselves. It is likely that this will contribute to a better optimisation of time, leaving lawyers with enough time to dedicate themselves to adding value to different matters of the business. It has to be considered though that at an early stage, lawyers will have to dedicate time to input and influence the creation of these machines and tools.
How do you suggest in-house lawyers build strong relationships with business partners?
It is essential to truly know the company and work closely with business partners from the beginning of the projects and collaborate to build the best legal structures to achieve commercial and business objectives. A constructive, possibilist and practical view is also highly appreciated by internal clients. A key observation is that business partners perceive lawyers as part of their teams too.
What are the most significant cases or projects you have been involved in recently?
I have been participating in the negotiations regarding the acquisition of football rights for the following seasons from 2022/2023 onwards. These rights form part of the core content proposal of Movistar+ pay television operator run by Telefonica in Spain that has approximately 3.8 million subscribers. I have been also involved in the agreements for integrating third parties premium OTT Services into Movistar+ platform such as Disney+, DAZN and Prime Video. In addition, I have actively participated in different public consultations regarding the new audio-visual general law that is incorporated into the Spanish legislation European Directive 2018/1808 (Audio-visual Media Services Directive) and is expected to be approved by the Spanish Government within 2022.
