Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?
The work of in-house teams will be positively and progressively impacted by technological advances, especially concerning the application of AI, in at least three aspects – the improvement of legal research, where judicial precedents and resolutions are essential daily, and AI generates an essential impact on existing systems; in a complementary way, it will generate more accurate predictions, which will allow legal teams to make decisions in an agile manner; it will enhance the capacity of lawyers to focus on more demanding areas, reducing the burden of administrative tasks, through the preparation of documents that can be used as a basis for legal briefs, court documents, or contracts.
How do you suggest in-house lawyers build strong relationships with business partners?
The role and the concept of the in-house lawyer have evolved significantly in recent times, seeking to get closer and add more value to business units. A strong relationship with business partners should be built on a solid knowledge of the business, the company´s competitors, the environment and profound up-to-date knowledge about the latest trends and advances relevant to the industry. That approach allows lawyers to think like managers and makes them better able to accompany and guide companies in their strategic decisions. At the same time, business units require in-house teams to be quick to respond and committed to assessing risks and, when necessary, to identify alternative qualified opinions from external firms if the matter at hand or the decision requires more specialised professional knowledge. Lawyers must be business partners involved in the achievement of the company’s objectives and security.
What are the most significant cases or projects you have been involved in recently?
The legal team has worked on the analysis and implementation of technologies to allow us to improve the company’s risk control and enhance the technical structure to provide better services to our business partners. Recently, I have been engaged in several business areas on projects involving the application of digital technologies to day-to-day business activities. These projects have made it possible to use our products in Spain and internationally.
