Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?

There are multiple reasons to have confidence in technological advancements. They make our work more efficient, in order to reduce the amount of time spent working on administrative and mechanical tasks, allowing us to employ our time and focus on more important assignments. Technological changes always come with challenges, and it is crucial to integrate people, processes, and technologies in innovative ways to enable the legal team to support the strategic objectives of the business. Many technological devices and uses can help the legal team – digital databases, AI, document manager. Digital advancements have helped us during the pandemic, encouraging virtual meetings, teleworking, and greater flexibility. It is highly likely to progress in the future.

How do you suggest in-house lawyers build strong relationships with business partners?

In-house lawyers contribute to business departments offering advice and support adopting a legal framework in order to provide necessary instruments to the business to develop its activities, expand and innovate. We must co-operate in order to mature a broad knowledge of the business and understand its objectives – the different departments need to coordinate to achieve the best possible outcomes. That is the main difference between internal and external lawyers – we work daily to support the business.

What are the most significant cases or projects you have been involved in recently?

We have been involved in several projects recently such as the relevant litigation procedures in relation of LaLiga’s rights regarding commercialisation of audiovisual and the organisation of sport competitions. Those procedures were crucial in order to guarantee and clarify the interpretation and application of the law that applies. We have engaged in global and strategic projects aimed at the development of the company and both in the changing audiovisual market and the process of internalisation. It is relevant to collaborate and to stay ahead of technological developments, to analyse the changes in the way fans consume the contents, to place resources to prevent issues such as piracy – there is a growing trend of piracy and illegal marketing of audiovisual content throughout the world.
