The Spain-based central legal team of BBVA (Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria) has an outstanding reputation globally. It has helped to oversee the bank’s international expansion and entrenched a strong commitment to compliance and ethics across the organisation as a whole. The team is led by chief legal and compliance officer is Eduardo Arbizu Lostao, who has been in charge of BBVA’s legal services since 2002. As the second largest bank in Spain and a component of the Euro Stoxx 50 stock market index, BBVA faces a wide range of legal challenges stemming from its complex global operations. The bank has also been incredibly ambitious with regard to technology and the legal team has played an important role in steering this transformation. These initiatives have continued in recent months: BBVA joined the open-source blockchain collaboration Hyperledger to help develop this new technology in the financial sector; it became the first bank in Spain to sign up with client lifecycle management software provider Fenergo; and hired David Puente into the new role of global head of data.
