An important pillar in the history of aviation in Spain, Líneas Aéreas de España, simply known as Iberia, was formed in 1927 and has been the flag carrier airline of Spain for much of the time since. As it represents the country in international markets, the airline’s success could even be considered a matter of national pride, which means its legal team are faced with an added dimension of responsibility. The airline famously merged with British Airways in 2010, a move that created at the time the third largest airline in the world by revenue and spawned the overall holding company International Airlines Group (IAG). The integration of what were already two very well established airlines, requiring power and responsibility-sharing initiatives to keep both parties in control, provided great organisational challenges for the legal teams of both companies. The airline market is notoriously competitive, so alliances on certain routes, or codeshares, allow revenue increases while avoiding the potential pitfalls of a more comprehensive business deal. Iberia has capitalised on this arrangement recently by announcing a codeshare agreement, in March 2017, with Qatar Airways which will see the airlines swap routes to and from their respective airline hubs in Doha, Spain and Portugal. Overseeing these and many other significant projects is secretary of the board and chief general counsel Peter Gabriel García-Torres Gómez, who moved to Iberia as general counsel in May 2012 after a long stint at Spanish state-owned bank Instituto de Crédito Oficial, highlighting his versatile legal repertoire. Supporting him is legal counsel Manuel Perez Perez who among other responsibilities coordinates local legal advisors in all of the over 50 jurisdictions that Iberia operates in, and legal counsel Eugenia Sebastián de Erice Malo de Molina. She is responsible for directly overseeing counsel dealing with the operational side of Iberia’s airline operation, including maintenance of aircraft, sales, procurement and logistics among others.
