The story of Inditex’s rise to the very top of the global clothing market is one of rapid growth punctuated by a string of major acquisitions and other business. The company, on the back of globally recognised brands under management including Zara, Pull & Bear and Bershka, now has extremely impressive sales figures, boasting €20.9bn in revenue for 2015. The company’s owner, Amancio Ortega, is also one of the world’s most prominent businesspeople, the richest person in Europe and the second richest globally. The responsibility for the significant legal challenges that arise from such a complex business entity lies with their in-house legal team, led by general counsel and secretary of the board Antonio Abril. Abril has vast experience at the company, having been head of Inditex’s legal operations since 1989. He is supported ably by other top legal talent in the department, including senior legal counsel Juan Saavedra Ortiz, who has been heavily involved in updating the company’s e-commerce infrastructure and processes. Alongside this, the legal team has been making efforts to optimise their internal processes, with a drive to push greater standardisation in contracts and other streamlining measures.
