Unicer has been producing one of Portugal’s favourite beers since the late nineteenth century. It has since branched out into other alcoholic beverages and soft drinks, but beer remains a core part of its identity. It is now the largest brewery in Portugal, the largest Portuguese exporter of beer and the producer of the best-selling Portuguese beer in the world, Super Bock, and is active in more than 50 countries and has a particularly strong presence in Africa. The Portugal-based legal team has been a vital ingredient in Unicer’s success, helping to evaluate business strategies and offering advice on everything from distribution agreements to recovery of funds. Nominators praised Margarida Soares, contracts manager, and Renato Costa, assistant legal director, for their dedication to building a first-class legal department. More generally the entire Unicer legal team stood out for its solid contribution to one of Portugal’s best loved brands. Indeed, Portugal’s taste for beer has for decades been quenched by a duopoly of Super Bock and its main rival Sagres, but the global craft beer revolution is now changing drinking habits. Unicer has responded by launching its own craft range, including its Selecção 1927 brand of Super Bock.
