The legal team of Accenture Portugal is led by Joana Pinto, who serves as senior legal director and has been at Accenture for nearly 12 years. There are a total of seven lawyers and one support staff within the team. The legal department of Accenture Portugal is structured in three areas, including a contracting team that provides support for Accenture’s client pursuit and contract negotiations. Pinto is the lawyer that heads the legal support to client engagements and matters that contain a high degree of complexity. The second area is a core team led by Paula Viegas, overseeing legal, compliance and regulatory issues and support of Accenture’s local business to operate and deliver services. The third area is a contract management team is headed by Sónia Monteiro, who manages Accenture’s contracts with its clients and suppliers. Accenture’s lawyers are highly encouraged to innovate by executing their initial ideas without being constrained by how things are typically done. At Accenture, lawyers are also challenged to anticipate and quickly react to various market changes and trends. The legal team guides the company through some of the largest business process outsourcing transactions in Portugal, and has played a key role as a strategic legal business partner in shaping deals and helping the company create innovative solutions to manage Accenture’s clients’ digital transformation. On the corporate side, the team has been involved in the major organisational restructuring of Accenture in Portugal. According to senior legal counsel Paula Viegas, risk management is a critical component across all the dimensions of the team’s work. ‘Our approach, as legal business partner, is to understand what we want to achieve, and the risks involved, so that we can help the business make good decisions about how we’re going to meet those objectives’, she says. The legal team plays a crucial role in helping the company grow and protect its business by providing end-to-end support for local legal matters. ‘We understand how regulatory and socio-economic developments may affect our local business and its operations, and we support our local business to operate, while keeping the objective of creating sustainable innovation models, ethical practices and long-term shareholder value’, says Viegas.
