Formerly known as Portugal Telecom (PT), Altice Portugal is a leading telecommunications operator in its home country. With around 8.1 million customers and a turnover of over €2bn in 2018, the company’s prominent position in the domestic market allows its in-house legal function to attract some of Portugal’s best legal professionals to its ranks. A significant proportion of the legal team was involved in facilitating the landmark acquisition of PT by Altice in 2015 and it continues to excel in facilitating keys deals for the company. Examples of these deals include the 2017 purchase of Promotora de Informaciones’ majority stake in Media Capital as part of Altice’s global convergence strategy. More recently, in 2019, members of the legal team contributed to negotiations that led to a partnership with cloud communication provider Vonage to provide leading-edge customer communications. With Altice Portugal also looking to significantly expand its fibre optic coverage in the country, the legal team is set to continue playing a key role in agreeing protocols for the company with municipalities across Portugal.
