‘Novartis’ in-house team should be considered for the GC Powerlist because of its key relevance for the company and the range of experts that belong to the legal department. Novartis’ legal team has as its main endeavour to provide counsel as a business partner through in-depth analysis and advice. In order to do so its lawyers are specialised in corporate law, data privacy, competition law, pharmaceutical and medical law, among others. The legal team provides solid seniority overall, strong business acumen and it is a critical ally and facilitator in any of the company’s strategic decisions and a key contributor to enable innovation and productivity. The Spanish legal team consists of ten lawyers who provide their counsel and work on a daily basis with all business divisions. Since the pharmaceutical industry is a highly regulated environment, the main goal of the legal department has an eminently risk preventive nature to support Novartis’ innovation and innovative legal strategies. Their legal advice covers all the value chain and the business cycle needs, from strategic decisions to negotiation with the public administration, research and litigation, as well as commercial agreements, pricing and corporate transactions. Moreover, trainings for the company employees are also part of the legal department mission regarding relevant issues such as competition law, social media, digital, logistics and reports on new legislation. A recent applicable example of the hands-on approach and the decisive nature of the Spanish legal department is its establishment of a legal digital hub in order to explore any opportunity – and boundaries – concerning digital projects from apps being medical devices to exploiting real world data to improve the life of the patient, while promoting and driving ethical and compliant behaviour.’
