Sener is a private engineering and technology group founded in 1956 specialised in offering technological solutions. The legal team at Sener includes 10 lawyers and three non-lawyers, where Ignacio Guerra Gimeno is the most senior member, acting as secretary of the board. Led by Ramón Varela Alzadabal, head of legal, the legal department splits into two fields, corresponding to the recent business restructuring of Sener group: Sener Aero which covers space, aviation, and defence and Sener Engineering which covers energy, infrastructure, and marine. Gabriel Vera Artázcoz is head counsel of Sener Aero, dealing with all matters related to the business area and is in charge of the corporate M&A department. Daniel Carnero Prieto and Ignacio Gacituaga Fernández are head counsels of Sener Engineering, coordinating the development of the legal department in two areas, namely, business development and operations. As a result of the split to Sener Aero and Sener Engineering, the legal department has faced and completed the challenge of restructuring itself while maintaining a unitary approach when giving legal services. Recently the team has been involved in some significant transactions, including achieving client acceptance of two thermal solar projects in South Africa, completing the acquisition of Tryo Aerospace and Electronics, and closing the deals for two biomass projects in Spain. Commenting on the legal team culture, Varela explains: ‘Despite the functional structure of the department, which responds to the split of the Sener business, the team has one single vision and is not overly hierarchically organised, with the idea that each member can demonstrate his or her ability and shine in front of the internal client’.
