Deborah Steiner

Team size: 22
Major legal advisers: Latham & Watkins
What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?
Just over one year ago, our company, which had been public for many decades, went private through an acquisition by Chatham Asset Management. We have had a lot of transition and movement as we have new leadership and direction.
Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?
Helping our team to understand that collaboration and less “chain of command” has improved efficiencies across all areas. While hierarchy is important, more important is getting the work done efficiently and effectively.
What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?
I believe that regardless of industry, the most successful and valuable general counsel are those who prioritise understanding their business on a micro-level – meeting with business leaders, driving strategy and engaging with the business in equal or greater parts than the legal team.
