What is the biggest risk facing your industry now and how are you preparing your organisation to deal with this?

I would look at this question differently- what are the opportunities in our industry that we, as legal, can help the company to capitalise on? Lighting is a complete value proposition now — offices, retail and hospitality, streets, stadiums and entertainment. Solar lighting also has a fantastic opportunity to change lives. Lighting is not only about luminescence but also about enhancing safety and being connected. Our connected proposition, along with lifecycle and managed services, adds considerable value to the customer. We in legal support deliver sound legal terms and conditions, robust contract reviews, deal structuring and diligence, which mitigates risk, recognises revenue opportunities, and enhances long-term value. Lighting is expanding in areas like horticulture, agriculture, and light fidelity. We can help evaluate these new application areas and build on the legal terms and boundaries in the constantly changing space of privacy, digitisation and security.

What are some of the most significant cases or transactions you have worked on recently?

We have worked on complex system and service projects in Australia, India, and Bangladesh. Those made me feel proud as they not only enhanced customer experience, but various risks were also identified and managed comprehensively. Working in different jurisdictions presents challenges and opportunities, and I am privileged to work on several legal matters across the METAP, South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific region.

Another area is competency building by designing and developing legal training, as I led and developed a few trainings with other legal colleagues which endeavoured to improve the competency of our project and sales colleagues in the area of project contracting, deal structuring, contract review, risk management through a right mix of theory and contemporary case studies.

What is a cause, business or otherwise, you are passionate about and why?

I am passionate about our CSR initiatives that exemplify our company’s purpose — unlocking the extraordinary potential of light to create brighter lives and a better world. Our CSR programs bring the power of lighting to people who need it the most, creating opportunities for people to work, study and play after dark.

Amongst these, I am most passionate about our initiative to improve computer literacy in blind schools, especially for girls. We try to do our bit by enhancing their computer or digital capability, offering them an equal chance to lead a life of success and pursue happiness.
