Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?  

For the first time, as a major innovation in our legal department, we started to move into complete digitalisation of all our documents. We store our digitised documents in the cloud, and this improved our efficiency, as we can share links to our counsel and consultants very easily. We also use software for capturing case data from court sites. Apart from this, we also have subscriptions with major online legal reference providers. We also have been outsourcing our menial jobs to contractors. We are now considering adopting the latest software tools to get document drafting done with aid of AI and also to conflict check different jurisdictions through leveraging technology. 

What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?  

Recently, we were engaged in the process of a merger of another company with ours and we successfully complied with all legal requirements involved. We have also been able to thwart the legal challenges with respect to a major land acquisition for our expansions.  We also worked on a joint venture with a global giant for a novel technology collaboration, which is almost in its completion stage. We have got many favourable awards and judgments in our arbitrations and litigations in the recent past. 

If you had to give advice to an aspiring in-house lawyer or general counsel, what would it be and why?   

An in-house lawyer essentially shall work in collaboration with others and shall not be a lone lawyer He must not stay in solitude thinking that he can work independently and isolating himself from other departments and management functionaries. He shall always strive to work objectively towards achieving the goals of the company and shall put in hard work using his knowledge of laws and expertise he possesses.
