Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense? 

We significantly increased productivity by integrating legal technology in matter management, digital contracting, contract analytics and other various legal and secretarial processes. We also successfully shifted legal work from higher-cost countries to India by setting up a ‘legal services hub’ that effectively handles assignments from Siemens Legal Global.  

What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?  

Last year’s focus was on various M&A transactions as well as big infrastructure project bids. We worked on the acquisition of two Indian targets and the execution of several global divestments. After the acquisitions, we drove the legal integration of the targets and established the legal function. We also successfully supported the business in wining several large infrastructure project bids, one of them being a mega project in the railway and rolling stock industry which has also been featured in the news.  

If you had to give advice to an aspiring in-house lawyer or general counsel, what would it be and why? 

Try to see things from your customers’ perspective and find straightforward and practical solutions to address business needs. Explain legal complexity in simple terms. Continuously aim to further simplify your templates and processes. Actively seek feedback and learn from your wins and mistakes. Strive to always do better next time.
