Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?
There are quite a few examples, which include setting up a litigation monitoring and management system (considering the high volume of litigations) and setting up compliance management system across India which automates compliances in a seamless manner. We adopted more efficient methods of storing files or data on past litigations in a structured manner so that they are easily retrievable.
I also practice and encourage the prioritisation of work so that team spends most of the time on things which matter most to the business. One needs to develop a mindset of evaluating each work against possible benefits or risk and whether it has the most priority at that point of time.
What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
My legal team and I work on number of matters in commercial deals, litigations, advisory, compliance, internal investigations, and governance across the region. I am responsible for business revenue of approximately €500m in this region.
Our company is the world leader in lighting products and services, with a global revenue of about €7bn, and is at the forefront of technology in lighting products and services. The team has collaborated and advised on some complex system and services projects in India, Australia, New Zealand; they not only enhanced customer experience, but various risks were also identified and managed in a comprehensive manner.
We take pride in advising and managing contractual, civil, and criminal litigation and other risks for the business. Working in diverse markets and as part of a global company has its challenges and opportunities and we are privileged to work on several legal matters across the India sub-continent and Pacific region.
Another area is competency building by designing and developing legal trainings; I led and developed few trainings with other legal colleagues which endeavoured to improve the competency of our project and sales colleagues in compliance awareness, projects contracting, deal structuring, contract review, and risk management, through a right mix of theory and contemporary case studies.
Our goal is to continuously improve our ability to respond to business challenges and leverage opportunities in these exciting and challenging markets.
