Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?
Internal restructuring has been implemented to establish roles, responsibilities, and targets. This idea, though simple, was not previously in place, so I introduced a structure to ensure the smooth functioning of the legal, contracts, and company secretary functions. I have also rolled out department procedures to ensure that there is no duplication of work, and each person responsible is required to perform their designated job.
What are the most significant cases and transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
We manage big-ticket litigation and arbitration cases for turnkey infrastructure projects, such as railways, metros, bridges, nuclear power plants, transmission lines, buildings, factories, airports, power and metals, oil and gas, tunnels, and environmental protection, among others. Typically, the government is the counterparty in these projects, which involve significant financial investments. Our role is to provide advice on recoveries, manage disputes and arbitrations, and ensure that we win and recover the funds.
Our contracts team supports the business and project teams by handling engineering aspects, document management, billing to the employer, and liaising with the project engineer. The company secretary is responsible for managing board meetings, various filings, and liaising with regulatory bodies.
If you had to give advice to an aspiring in-house lawyer or general counsel, what would it be and why?
Work hard and get your hands dirty; there are no shortcuts to success except hard work and dedication!
