What are the most significant cases or transactions that you have been involved in over the past year?

Over the past year, I managed a particularly challenging case involving the separation from a key business partner, which had already escalated into multiple civil and criminal litigations. The situation was complex, with several legal fronts developing simultaneously. However, through persistent negotiation and strategic legal maneuvering, we were able to resolve the disputes and reach a comprehensive settlement. This not only brought an end to the ongoing litigations but also helped prevent further reputational damage and operational disruption. It was a critical moment where swift action and a focus on de-escalation allowed us to protect the company’s interests while closing the matter on mutually acceptable terms. In parallel, I also worked on several strategic M&A projects, where my role involved navigating intricate legal and regulatory frameworks, managing due diligence, and overseeing contract negotiations. These transactions were critical to the company’s growth strategy, and the successful execution ensured our competitive position in the market while maintaining legal integrity throughout the process.

What innovations have you made to the way your legal team works in the past year?

In the past year, I have implemented several innovations to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of our legal team. One significant initiative was the introduction of a proactive litigation management tool, which allows us to track ongoing cases, monitor key deadlines, and analyze trends in litigation. This has enabled us to be more strategic in our approach, reducing risks and improving our response times.

Additionally, we adopted a statutory compliance management tool that centralises our statutory compliance obligations across various jurisdictions. This tool not only streamlines our tracking and reporting processes but also ensures that we remain up-to-date with changing regulations, minimising potential liabilities.

Based on your experience, what is the key to collaborating successfully with business partners?

Based on my experience, the key to successfully collaborating with business partners lies in establishing clear communication and mutual trust from the outset. It’s essential to set expectations early, ensuring that both parties have a shared understanding of goals, responsibilities, and timelines.

Building strong relationships is also crucial. Taking the time to understand the partner’s business model, culture, and challenges fosters a collaborative environment where both sides can work together effectively. Regular check-ins and open lines of communication help address issues as they arise, preventing misunderstandings and ensuring alignment.

Additionally, being adaptable and open to feedback is vital. Business landscapes can change rapidly, so being flexible and willing to adjust strategies as needed helps maintain a productive partnership. Finally, maintaining a focus on shared outcomes—whether that’s innovation, growth, or problem-solving—reinforces a sense of teamwork and commitment to mutual success.

How do you motivate and manage the other members of your legal team well?

To motivate and manage my legal team effectively, I prioritise open communication and transparency. I encourage team members to share their ideas and concerns, fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and heard. Regular one-on-one check-ins help me understand their individual motivations and career aspirations, allowing me to provide tailored support and mentorship.

I also set clear goals and expectations, ensuring that each team member understands their role and how it contributes to our broader objectives. Celebrating successes, whether big or small, is crucial for maintaining morale; I make it a point to recognise individual and team achievements publicly.

Additionally, I conduct Boot-Camps (Chintan Shivirs) and invest in professional development opportunities, such as training sessions and workshops, to help team members understand the business objectives, enhance their skills and advance their careers. By promoting a culture of continuous learning and collaboration, I empower my team to take ownership of their work and stay engaged and motivated.
