Citibank India is an Indian private sector bank headquartered in Mumbai and is a subsidiary of Citigroup, a multinational financial services corporation. As one of the premier financial institutions in the country, the Citibank India legal team lives up to the same reputation and is made up of 37 lawyers, seven technologists, three company secretaries and two office administrators. The team has been part of significantly changing perceptions and attitudes towards in-house lawyers, by transforming into an active business partner and playing a central role on internal controls for the products, processes and technologies pioneered by Citi. General counsel Pramod Rao explains: ‘Today the in-house legal team at Citi does much more than offer pure legal advice. The product lawyers are involved at the genesis of new products and services created for and provided to our clients. This has especially come to the forefront with the move towards digitalisation and automation’. Citi’s legal team consistently scrutinizes and reviews all products and services to ensure that it provides absolute measures of security and protection for its clients and itself whilst being efficient and effective. Amongst its standout initiatives, Citi’s legal team is a leader in promoting diversity at work, Pramod Rao holds the chair for Citi’s diversity counsel and hold periodic diversity session across business in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Furthermore, Citi is a partner of IDIA, a premier not-for-profit organisation working towards making the legal profession a career reality for the underprivileged sections of society. The legal team members are volunteers in sessions, mentoring and providing internship opportunities to IDIA associates. Citi Super 8 is a yearly event where Citi brings together law firms in pursuit of furthering collaboration across the legal fraternity beyond the work desk.
