As a part of the large global legal team of Suez, the Suez India team has the benefit of engaging with and learning from lawyers across the world. Equally, over the last two years, the geographical scope as well as the activities of the legal team have expanded. From servicing the India business, it is now catering to the entire regional business area which includes Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and other countries on the Indian subcontinent. The team size has also increased accordingly. In terms of its role, the team has been actively involved in M&A activities and has also been supporting major contracts across the subcontinent. Emphasising the importance of personal development and growth, the team has also conducted several trainings for employees on topics such as anti-corruption law, competition law, contract management and workplace safety for women. Each member has donned several hats and has contributed to the business in her or his own way, general counsel Prarabdha R. Jaipuriar explains: ‘For a business engaged in government contracts and large-scale, and sometimes widespread operations, one of the most important roles that the lawyers play is in crisis management, be it in courts or elsewhere. By doing this part well, the lawyers not only safeguard the interests of the company but also instil a sense of confidence in the operational teams’. Characterised by high levels of responsibility and responsiveness, the team has successfully accomplished various projects including the consolidation of industrial water businesses and desalination projects in the region. Most recently the team was involved in the $3.4bn acquisition of GE Water as well as certain significant contracts.
