Claire Murphy assumed the role of group general counsel, company secretary and head of shared services of enet in the summer of 2018. Since then she has been central to enet’s involvement in the National Broadband Project across Ireland, serving on enet’s public accounts committee and putting in place new governance and other processes across the group. In the words of a nominator, ‘Claire Murphy has a unique skillset and is in particular an expert communicator, which enables her to manage relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders both inside and outside the organisation. This has allowed her to make a really strong impact, as a member of the senior leadership team, in a short period of time’. Murphy identifies that she had ‘always aspired to being a general counsel with an operational role, and enet provided that opportunity’. She has built a newly defined role from the ground up that covers a wide number of disciplines, which she describes as ‘hugely challenging but very rewarding’. She adds that ‘the opportunity to bring transformational leadership to an organisation that had a 100% change in shareholder and a whole new management team was a very rewarding experience. Leveraging my knowledge and experience of strategic leadership and change management facilitated a smooth transition for all through this period of change’. She has responsibility for key decisions of a strategic nature which influences the direction the business takes and she has been a key enabler in the role. The transitional role Murphy has played as general counsel has evolved, and as she identifies, her team of lawyers are more nimble and strategic, and are a hugely valued partner to the business given the team’s wide skillset and qualities. She has developed a detailed, first of its kind, three year business plan which sets out company values, objectives, and focused initiatives. She identifies that this, ‘has provided the business with a roadmap, and motivated people to perform at a higher standard. I am proud of the output and the focused direction it has given all aspects of the business’.
