Sanaea Daruwalla started her career working at law firms in California, focused on business and employment litigation, corporate, and IP law. She then started her own practice before moving in-house. Daruwalla has been working as a head of legal for technology companies in Ireland for the past four years and have been with Scrapinghub since the start of 2018. The main highlight of her in-house career, as she identifies, has been assisting high growth companies scale in an efficient and compliant manner. She says, ‘I enjoy working with companies that are growing at a rapid pace, and this often comes with many growing pains and challenges. A well-structured legal department can not only help companies stay compliant and avoid costly litigation, but it can also foster rapid global and commercial expansion’. Daruwalla was the first legal counsel in Scrapinghub, and therefore had the opportunity to build the legal department from the ground up. She highlights that, ‘the ability to build a department from scratch can be daunting, but it also allows me the flexibility to build out the right processes and practices from the very start. Creating the legal department has affected the company across the board – from streamlining the contracting and sales processes, corporate compliance, product development advice, IP protection, global expansion, and employment law, to strategic expansion, including financing, grant writing, and strategic planning’. Her transactional highlights include obtaining large funding rounds, obtaining patents on core technology, implementing GDPR policies and practices throughout the company, and managing litigation.
