How do you see the general counsel role evolving in Ireland over the next five-ten years?

The role of a general counsel within an organisation entails recognising the multifaceted nature of their responsibilities. Modern general counsel must offer more than legal proficiency. They must deliver swift, astute, and practical solutions while being cognisant of the business needs and requirement for strategic growth. The position requires and will increasingly require the ability to engage, collaborate, and harmonise with diverse business partners and stakeholders, particularly amidst the evolving landscape of technology, ESG requirements and shifting business paradigms. It is imperative to evolve the traditional role of siloed legal advisor into a trusted and equipped business partner. Any company that fosters and supports a general counsel who embodies these qualities is poised for success.

How have you attempted to bring the legal department closer to your business colleagues?

Building robust connections with business colleagues is crucial for in-house lawyers to effectively support their organisations. Proactive, transparent, and consistent communication fosters these relationships, allowing legal teams to effectively address challenges and provide valuable counsel.

By aligning with the company’s strategic objectives and demonstrating commercial acumen, lawyers can position themselves as trusted business partners rather than impediments to progress. It is essential to understand the business deeply, engage regularly with stakeholders, embrace technology, and offer practical, solution-oriented advice while at the same time leading ethically.

Ultimately, by prioritising collaboration, communication, and adaptability with business colleagues, in-house lawyers can establish themselves as indispensable allies in driving organisational success whilst maintaining risk management.
