Sarah Lennon is the regional counsel for Ireland at global internet technology company Google, whose team provide round-the-clock legal counsel on a broad range of issues across a wide geographical remit. Based in Dublin, the team supports Google’s EMEA operation which employs over 6,000 people and requires a diversification of legal talent and activity; the team often deal with high profile litigation but also find themselves working on other issues including the legalities surrounding the launch of Google’s latest innovative products. Throwing up a somewhat unique challenge due to the fast paced nature of the internet and Google’s leading position in the market, the team can often find themselves crafting innovative approaches in tackling some of the toughest legal challenges of the information age. External factors are a constant pressure on the team, and the landmark decision emanating from the Google Spain Case resulting in the “Right to be Forgotten” ruling has thrown up an influx of requests from Google’s European users to remove personal information from search results. A difficult and potentially reputation damaging case, the ruling is being handled by Google’s legal team in a thoughtful and composed manner, Lennon explains how the team is ‘continuing dialogue with regulators’ and ‘carefully developing criteria’ to assess the vast number of circumstances the removal requests are creating. The highly-regulated Irish and European markets have encouraged the regional legal team to create partnerships within the business to produce the best solutions for problems. Lennon explains that ‘a key element of this is teaming up with the Policy group in interactions with regulators and government, helping to foster an understanding of Google’s online technologies and establishing the company’s reputation as a responsible online intermediary’. Able to strike a fine balance between working closely with management to ensure the business maintains its ‘innovative edge’ while avoiding potential legal pitfalls it is exposed to each day, the Google team are proven problem solvers exhibiting a fully integrated commercial mindset.
