Rory Sullivan, the legal director for Pfizer in Ireland, leads a team of three lawyers who are collectively responsible for navigating the company through the pharmaceutical market with assuredness, even in the face of a complex and changing market environment. Due to the nature of the heavily-regulated pharmaceutical sector, Sullivan and his cross-functional team are extremely important in steering the business through any changes in the legal landscape despite having less resources at their disposal compared to previous years. Sullivan cites ‘in-depth legal analysis and practical advice’ as well as innovative solutions to day-to-day issues as being the team’s focus. A more intense workload has meant that the team has had to be pragmatic in their dispensation of advice, modifying work methodologies and prioritising between tasks to best serve their clients. Enjoying ‘close interaction with senior management’ in Ireland and with key stakeholders in Pfizer’s corporate headquarters in the US, the legal team’s role as an important business partner is also shown by its ability to drive projects towards successful conclusions. In addition to this business-enabling effect on Pfizer’s Irish subsidiary, Sullivan himself is on a number of Irish management teams for the company, and is therefore involved in an active way in the very formation of company strategy. An excellent example of a trusted legal function who are involved from formation, to approval, to successful implementation of business strategy – it is clear to see why the Irish legal team is a huge asset to Pfizer.
