UK telecommunications company BT has a major presence in Ireland, employing 600 people across five cities in the country and serving 1.2 million customers. It is a leader in Ireland on mobile and fibre connectivity technology as well as cloud and network services operating with over 4000km of fibre network and its €65m data centre in Dublin. Ruth Murphy is chief counsel for enterprise at BT in Ireland, and leads its well-respected legal function that provides advice to the firm on costumer, supplier and commercial legal matters. Murphy serves on the management team of its major and public sector division working with public sector organisations and large businesses in Ireland and the UK. BT is the Irish market leader for carrier and voice services and an innovator in terms of cloud technology and the “internet of things” market. The legal function is involved in making this possible through its scrutiny of all the legal matters related to this highly sensitive industry. Matters arising from new data protection, tax and other regulations are dealt with and handled by the team, as well as planning for the impact of Brexit on its considerable Irish businesses.
