Diageo’s ownership of major Irish brands Guinness and Baileys Irish Cream means it occupies a special place in the Irish business landscape. Indeed, regional counsel, Richard Kindred mentions that perhaps the most eye-catching deals the legal team haves supported in the past year are related to the various developments at the St James’ Gate brewery site made famous as the home of Guinness: ‘We announced the construction of a new Roe & Co whiskey distillery in the former Guinness Power Station at St. James’ Gate, and have also announced a €16m expansion to the Guinness Storehouse to ensure it can continue to be the most popular tourist attraction in Ireland. Finally, we announced plans to develop 12.6 acres of its St James’ Gate site to create a dynamic mixed-use urban district consisting of residential, office and commercial spaces. This has required us to undertake oversight of significant property, planning and construction work as well as taking care of licensing and other regulatory matters’. Internally, the Diageo legal function prides itself on following general counsel Siobhán Moriarty’s four As of Ability, Affability, Availability and Affordability, which inform all aspects of its work. It is rolling out a number of new technological solutions to increase its effectiveness, including ‘a new fees, invoice and tender management system which allows us to view new tenders in real time as they appear’. Kindred explains that ‘this also allows panel firms to see a project instantly and bid for it electronically, streamlining this process as well’.
