Goshawk is a thriving emerging business in the aviation industry specialising in commercial aircraft leasing with 183 planes worth over US$9.1bn in its portfolio. With offices in Dublin and Hong Kong it has a global reach and has aircraft distribution centres across the globe. In June 2018, Goshawk finalised a takeover agreement with SKY Aviation’s Irish subsidiary adding 17 new leases in six new countries greatly expanding the company’s industry presence. The legal team was heavily involved in this transaction and in its internal legal concerns as well as managing the company’s relationship with external counsel. Peter Caley, the chief legal officer, describes the team’s structure as an indicator of its and the company’s rapid success. Explaining his thought, Caley had the following to say: ‘The team is purposefully relatively flat with the lawyers being all around the same post-qualified experience level. We don’t really focus on who is the most senior or junior member of the team, but instead focus on giving each lawyer the room to grow and develop themselves, in line with what they want to achieve in their career, and supporting each other through collaboration and a pooling of ideas and experiences. I think that one of the real strengths of the team here at Goshawk is that the lawyers all work well together and support each other without being focused on who is senior or junior. Everyone has something to contribute and an experience that is valuable’.
