David Boyle has been general counsel at Irish Life since 2013, leading the legal department of the leading life assurance and pension company in Ireland established in 1939. Irish life is part of the The Great-West Life Assurance Company, which is one of the largest insurance groups in the world with US$1.2 trillion in consolidated assets. With over one million customers, Irish Life is one of the largest insurers in Ireland offering pensions, investments, life insurance and corporate insurance products. With this large market share comes a challenge to manage its legal matters. The legal team excels in handling the contract underwriting, brokerage and corporate governance required by this demanding industry. In 2018 Irish Life paid out €187.8m in claims, a €70.5m increase on 2017, requiring the supervision of Boyle’s team. The team is also busy advising on the company’s expansion of product offerings, and corporate expansion. The company announced in April that it has acquired a strategic shareholding in Invesco, the largest Irish-owned financial consultancy, based in Dublin and Cork.
