Miriam Caley, head of legal Ireland, has led the legal department at Optum Ireland – a leading health services and technology company and part of UnitedHealth Group – since 2016 following a career in corporate M&A in private practice. Optum uses software and data computing to drive improved experiences and better outcomes with focus on pharmacy care services, population health management, healthcare delivery and operations and advisory services. Caley’s legal team supports the Optum business in Ireland in both its sites in Letterkenny and Dublin on all matters of Irish law. Caley’s team has seen rapid growth (from one in 2016 to six in 2018) which reflects the overall growth of Optum Ireland. Given Optum Ireland’s focus on R&D, in addition to the traditional legal areas of corporate governance, real estate and contracts, Caley and her team had to familiarise themselves with state-of-the-art technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, data analytics and genomics in order to support the business most effectively.
