Established in 1934, the Irish Smurfit Kappa Group has grown into one of the largest paper-based packaging companies in the world. At present the company operates a wide network of paper, recycling and forestry operations and employs 34,000 employees across 33 countries. Over the past decade the company’s Dublin-based legal unit has been instrumental in developing the business, receiving credit for facilitating several important acquisitions which allowed the company to consolidate its position as a leading player in the local market. In the first quarter of 2018 alone, for instance, the team is recognised for its support of the company’s €460m acquisition of Dutch paper and recycling business Reparenco in a deal that goes a long way to furthering Smurfit Kappa’s strategy to expand into new markets. The team is led by group general counsel and member of the executive committee Brian Marshall, who has been with the company since 1996, Smurfit Kappa’s legal team features a plethora of excellent lawyers like Sarah Governey and Niall Keane.
