What are the most significant cases and transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?

Squarespace has grown in terms of international reach, with the establishment of new entities across Australia, Portugal, the UK and the Netherlands.

Aisling Kearney was Squarespace’s lead legal advisor when it released its ninth Super Bowl ad this year, starring Adam Driver. Aisling negotiated the talent agreement with Adam Driver, along with the production agreement, pre- and post-agreements, content and storyboard review among others.

These responsibilities are not unfamiliar to Kearney, who safely navigated the legal landscape on Squarespace’s behalf for the 2022 and 2021 Super Bowl ads starring Zendaya, Andre 3000 and Dolly Parton. Aisling also advised on Squarespace’s partnership with Icelandic artist, Björk, for its Squarespace Icons campaign and continuously advises our creative team on all production related activities.

Last year, Unfold – Squarespace’s social media template app – released its NFT and Digital Collectibles feature, allowing users to create and mint NFTs. This involved navigating a new legal space for modern technology, setting up ownership structures and terms for users, and ensuring the cryptocurrency element of the product was secure.

Our team is also developing and preparing to launch Squarespace Payments in 2023, along with other products and features on an ongoing basis.

What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?

A major challenge has been launching new products and features across multiple international markets. This is especially difficult because of the evolving regulatory landscape, which requires extensive consideration to ensure compliance.

Has the increasing consciousness of climate change and sustainability affected your company and the team’s priorities, and if so, how?

Squarespace has always been conscious of its environmental impact and considers both big and small ways to reduce our impact on the environment.
