Antonio Sirica is a lawyer with 15 years of experience both as in-house counsel and external advisor in corporate and contract law, compliance, M&A transactions and restructuring. Sirica joined multinational aerospace manufacturing company Piaggio Aerospace in June 2014 which at the time had no legal function or general counsel. Upon joining, Sirica’s first task was to design and build from scratch a modern legal and compliance department meeting the highest international legal and business standards. Sirica has been actively involved in the successful completion of the process of an industrial and financing restructuring of Piaggio Aerospace at the end of 2017, an event which he claims was extremely challenging both from a technical and personal perspective as the current bankruptcy law poses a lot of issues to the management teams of companies going through a financial crisis. Over the four years in his position, Sirica has taken the opportunity to implement a new 231 organisational model, meeting the highest ethical and business standards and subsequently creating cultural change in the way the company looks at and reacts to legal risks and issues. Sirica has also revamped its data protection compliance in order to be in-line with the new requirements provided by the general data protection regulation. Sirica works with a goal in mind to ‘minimise legal risks without minimising the business’. Elaborating further on this he says, ‘I firmly believe that these words encompass the quintessence of the role for any good general counsel or, more simply, for any lawyer who really wants to create added value for the company he serves’. This mantra has accompanied him through over ten years of work at his previous role in the Milan branch of Clifford Chance.
