Diego Manzetti joined AIG as its first Italy based in-house lawyer, and therefore had to shape the function and build it from scratch, creating a robust function that has moulded company policy ever since. Due to his demonstrable success at this task, in 2011 he was appointed general counsel for AIG’s Italian operations, and in 2016 he was also given the additional role of head of legal for South European and MENA countries. During his time at the company he has restructured the existing claims panel, introducing new type of contractual agreements that would increase the control on expenses to ensure and improve transparency throughout the company. He has also reviewed the internal processes linked to the participation to public tenders, introducing controls and providing training to the employees with a view of increasing their knowledge. Over the years Manzetti has emphasised the external reputation of the company, making sure that AIG is always properly represented in non-business forums, a way he has accomplished this is by consistently keeping a profound knowledge of the industry in which the company operates. When discussing this he states: ‘I always insisted having a lawyer involved in each business meeting to help design a sustainable business strategy that also looked at the legal issues and opportunities’.
