An internationally experienced in-house lawyer having previous roles based in Florence, London and Paris, Emiliano Berti currently manages a team of nearly 80 people as head of legal and compliance...
In 2014, Emiliano Berti joined Nokia firstly as head of legal and compliance for South-East Europe and through assuming increasing responsibility was eventually promoted to head of legal and compliance for Europe, where he currently manages a team of lawyers and contract managers based all over the region with responsibility of over 66 countries. During his time in this role Berti was wholly involved in massively reducing external spend in Europe, something that is considered crucial owing to the headcount rationalisation he faced within the legal team. He states his ‘golden rule’ has always been to do more with less, by leveraging processes automation to the furthest extent possible and by implementing lean six sigma projects (initiatives that help with sustainable development) to help the team maximise their support. Berti also takes pride in team building and people management, something which he mentions as a highlight of his career, due to an ingrained mentality he describes as: ‘You never win alone and growing talented people in an inspiring environment is the first and most important task on a senior manager’s agenda’. Berti has also been part of several high-value transactions with leading telecommunication customers in Europe, one of which has been supporting Alcatel and lately Comptel’s integration within Nokia’s European business. Before joining Nokia, he previously served as an associate at the McDermott Will & Emery law firm in Rome and Milan, where he was part of the team who handled the complex Parmalat bankruptcy case on behalf of its US subsidiaries. After completing his LLM he moved to GE in its oil and gas business, and was based in Florence and London where he served as senior counsel for the company’s European operations. He then joined the integration team of Converteam, GE’s newly acquired company in the power generation business, which saw him move to Paris within the GE Power conversion business in several roles, until he became global counsel for sourcing and lead counsel for the energy business.
