Before assuming his current position of deputy group general counsel – head of legal and corporate affairs for Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, Giovanni Lombardi amassed a strong private practice background of over ten years, combined with previous experience within a real estate asset company, Prelios, as its head of corporate and legal affairs. In his current role at the historic financial institution – which is one of the oldest banks in the world – he is responsible for corporate governance matters, capital markets, M&A and credit restructuring, and has been involved in the restructuring of the group and implementation of a reorganisation plan which has recently been approved. Lombardi takes great pride in establishing a culture of teamwork within all the legal functions, together with a strong cooperation with all the business functions and the push for a better acknowledgment of compliance and risk throughout the company. He says that one of the highlights of his in-house career is having gained the ability to promptly ‘address any issues with the idea that in fast changing scenarios and highly regulated environments both by national and EU laws, we can always learn something new and find new solutions, supporting the business and be fully compliance with the applicable regulations at the same time’. Having had the opportunity to serve at the forefront of all the large-scale transactions within the bank, Lombardi recognises the professional growth the bank has enabled him to have: ‘The experience in the Bank could simply be described as extraordinary: [I am] very proud to work for the oldest bank in the world and to have contributed to the burden sharing, the precautionary recapitalisation and the restructuring plan approved in 2017’. Since 2017 he also became a board member of Perimetro Gestione Proprietà Immobiliari, which owns and manages the majority of the real estate assets of the group.
