After beginning her career at top British law firms Clifford Chance and Penningtons, as well as in academic research and the public sector working on Italian civil and commercial law, Margherita Boccia first joined Banca IMI in 1999. After serving as a legal counsel she then became the deputy head of legal and head of the primary fixed income markets legal department at Banco Caboto in 2005, re-joining Banca IMI in 2007. In her current role of legal counsel and deputy head of legal investment services, she has been involved in all domestic and Eurobond and US transactions regarding primary fixed income markets, including liability management transactions, as well as secondary market, structured finance and securitisation. Boccia has been involved in all of the Bank’s transactions relating to issuance of debt instruments of the Republic of Italy, including project finance and municipality bonds recently issued by Italian companies and securitisation transactions. She has worked to strengthen Banca IMI’s role in the International Capital Market Association (ICMA) legal committee by being focused on all developments relating the legal framework in the current fiscal environment and been adaptive to the changes caused by the prospectus directive and other European legislation. Boccia describes herself as having the tools to succeed as a manger through her ‘capacity to deal with long and hard negotiations, flexibility in being involved in different kind of transactions, capacity to be focused on the target, and the capacity to understand necessary changes which can make the negotiation successful for our company bearing in mind the necessary protection from legal standpoint’.
