How do you feel the pandemic has changed the world of work for in-house counsel and the function of the general counsel?
I have been a general counsel for two well-established international banks; I previously worked at Industrial and Commercial Bank of China before my current position at BBVA as a general counsel. Having involved in the key decision-making process for their companies, the function of general counsel is emphasised more than ever as a strategic business partner. In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, in-house lawyers were required to interpret the relevant law promptly to help their organisations during the challenging time. The organisational demand for legal advice brought more senior in-house lawyers to the table of board level discussion. They are now in the position of taking initiatives with more strategic approach whilst handling risk management for their organisation.
What are the most significant cases and transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
The team has been involved in a range of significant finance transactions, with particular focus on ESG, infrastructures, and renewables. In-house lawyers can build strong relationships with business partners by pointing out potential issues and possible solutions.
