What do you feel are the pros and cons of an in-house legal role compared to a private practice one?
At the beginning of my career, I worked in private practice. I can firmly state that there is not an enormous difference in workload, the intensity of work, and the job itself. However, an in-house role demands a perfect balance between a strictly legal position and advising on best business practices and problem-solving. That is the most significant difference, but it can easily be overcome by adapting. Moreover, there is also a difference within the in-house sector itself. It changes depending on if the general counsel works for single or multiple brands. The latter implies that you work with different clients, which is even more similar to a private practice role. We are both professionals, and we have many clients – our main priority is the satisfaction of the clients or brands we work for; secondly, there are plenty of organisation skills required.
