General counsel | Aeroporto di Bologna

How do you feel the pandemic has changed the world of work for in-house counsel and the function of the general counsel?

My role has become more strategic over the course of the Covid-19 pandemic, taking on a relevant role in the decision-making process concerning crisis management, and being part of the committee addressing policies and safety procedures at the airport in relation to passengers, operators and workers. The initial response to Covid-19 required assertive decision-making in a changing environment. In-house lawyers had to interpret the guidance and make decisions based on that. General counsel became more strategic and advisory, rather than focused on compliance. Remote working has been highly successful across my team, and we managed to be very productive throughout the pandemic.

What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?

During the past year, my company engaged in various projects aimed both at recovery and revision of objectives, because of the impact of the pandemic. I assumed a crucial role in successful operations such as the masterplan approval – intervention and upgrade of the infrastructure by 2030; it provides the acquisition of new areas and the expansion of the airport. The sub-concession of commercial spaces duty free and duty paid in October 2022, resulting in improved economic conditions and revenue. Aereoporto Guglielmo Marconi of Bologna became a partner, with small investments with Aereoporti di Roma, Aereporti di Venezia and the Aeroports de la Cote d’Azur, joining forces in an innovative project for construction and management. Additionally, a €90m loan has been signed between the company and the European Investment Bank to support infrastructure and development plans, in order to offer an improved service to passengers, supporting traffic growth and improving sustainability.

What do you feel are the pros and cons of an in-house legal role compared to a private practice one?

I genuinely enjoy working in-house rather than at a law firm. Firstly, because it provides a wide perspective of business and its activities and not only on the legal aspects. Among the pros of being a general counsel there is the opportunity to contribute to the overall strategic direction of the company. In my role I have the chance to apply my skills across a wider range of work, rather than being extremely specialised in one area. Additionally, it provides good chances for a better work-life balance.
