Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?  

We have recently implemented regular training sessions, organised internally, in order to share the knowledge and constant communication and cooperation between the lawyers albeit working from different locations. 

Can you foresee any key developments to the way general counsel work over the next five years?  

Increased budget control requirements in a challenging environment with increased litigation in the energy sector. 

What are some of the main trends impacting the industry sector you work in in Italy?  

Climate change issues paired with shortage of traditional fuels due to sanctions. 

What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?  

Eni has a well-developed sustainability plan, and the role of the general counsel is to cooperate in driving the company to its challenging objectives with constant control of the changing legislative framework and the interactions with the different stakeholders. 

How would you assess the impact of new technologies on the legal landscape in Italy, and what measures would you propose to leverage these technologies while ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations?  

New technologies are key for the energy transition process and legal assistance is focused on M&A transactions to acquire companies which are developing them and in assisting the business in developing and constructing R&D contracts. 

How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment?  

Personally, in my department, I always focus on creating a gender-diverse environment in order to guarantee a friendly and non-discriminatory environment. In selecting external legal advice, I try to make sure that genders are again equally represented in the proposed legal teams and promote the selection of female arbitrators in arbitrations to which Eni is party to. 

How do you stay updated on the evolving regulatory landscape in Italy and ensure compliance with domestic laws, EU regulations, and industry-specific regulations?  

Ensuring constant training both academically and on the field for my colleagues and myself.
