Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?
I have constantly promoted and encouraged continuous training directly delivered by management colleagues to their own colleagues on matters of decisive interest to the company, to foster knowledge sharing and exchange of useful information. Such training has provided a broader perspective in dealing with issues and the possibility of continuous comparisons that also foster the resolution of issues.
What are some of the main trends impacting the industry sector you work in in Italy?
Two of the major trends that are impacting the rail passenger transport sector are mobility as a service (MaaS).and sustainability.
MaaS is global mobility concept in which my company participates as a key player, and which involves the integration of multiple public and private transportation services accessible through a single digital channel. This mobility project has been declined by the Italian government through the Mobility as a Service for Italy project to which the European National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRP) devotes some investments. Through digital intermediary platforms that combine various features ensuring different travel alternatives, users can book and pay for multiple services according to their needs. An effective MaaS service can be an extremely useful tool in fostering a shift toward more sustainable modes of transportation.
Sustainability is the other trend impacting the rail transportation sector. In this regard, the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group wants to create an ecosystem of sustainable mobility and integrated logistics that can rely on interconnected and resilient infrastructure. This initiative is in line with the Green Deal, and ten years ahead of the target set by Europe. The FS Group intends to become carbon neutral by zeroing out CO2 emissions to reduce its climate impact.
How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment?
I have constantly been working on the gender gap and gender pay gap front. Within my legal department, I have tried to balance the ratio of men to women in management roles and I have equalised their salaries to balance the gender pay gap, which is generally high in Italy.
How do you stay updated on the evolving regulatory landscape in Italy and ensure compliance with domestic laws, EU regulations, and industry-specific regulations?
I always try to find time to take part, mostly as speaker, in conferences in University and write books, articles and, publications in general. This activity, on one hand, entails constant study and requires staying up to date. On the other hand, it allows for dialogue with important experts on the national and European regulatory framework and provides better ways to tackle significant legal issues.
What Is a cause, business-related or otherwise, you are passionate about, and why?
I am passionate about legal issues related to the proper application of the provisions of EC Regulation n. 1370/2007. Trenitalia faced several legal challenges brought by competitors and national authorities before national Courts and European Court of Justice. Through the victory of these causes, Trenitalia has been awarded over 15 service contracts with competent public entities and regions to improve the quality of public service.
