Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?
In my M&A and finance teams, I have proposed a different way of approaching the legal in-house profession through a knowledge management process based on continuous training and openness to innovative technical solution, and the maximum involvement of each member of the teams in the business decision-making process to ensure the best understanding of internal needs. This allows my team to (i) find the solutions that best suit internal business needs, and (ii) play an active role in each process and deal.
Can you foresee any key developments to the way general counsel work over the next five years?
I believe that the internal lawyer is increasingly involved in company processes; moreover, the internal lawyer is increasingly the link between the company’s internal strategy and its concrete external execution through support in the negotiation processes.
What are some of the main trends impacting the industry sector you work in in Italy?
The energy sector in general is strongly impacted by various trends at this historical moment. There is, for example, the commitment to progressive decarbonisation process, the impact of ESG policies on the business and the need to supply energy by resorting to alternative sources to those used by the market to date. There are innovative sectors that are developing (such as agribusiness for example) which will require the development of new skills within the legal and business structures.
